A stone monument erected by a son who became a monk, contemplating his mother.
Recorded as the oldest surviving Japanese text, it expresses his thoughts dedicated to his mother in the inscription “Hahatameki.”
山上碑は飛鳥時代の681年に建てられたもので、完全な形で残っているものとしては日本最古の石碑です。石をあまり加工しないで使っており、朝鮮半島の新羅［しらぎ］の石碑（6世紀）に類似しています。
碑文は、すべて漢字で書かれていますが、日本語の語順で読むことができます。現在につながる日本独自の漢字の使用法が確認できる非常に貴重な史料です。
The Yamanoue Monument was built in the year 681 during the Asuka period, making it the oldest stone monument in Japan that has survived in complete form. It is crafted with minimal processing of the stone and bears similarities to the monuments of Silla (Shiragi) in the Korean Peninsula, dating back to the 6th century.
While the inscription is entirely in Chinese characters, it can be read in the word order of Japanese. This monument serves as an invaluable historical document, confirming the unique usage of Chinese characters in Japan that has continued to the present day.

辛巳年（天武天皇十年＝西暦六八一年）十月三日に記す
佐野屯倉をお定めになった健守命の子孫の黒売刀自。これが、新川臣の子の斯多々弥足尼の子孫である大児臣に嫁いで生まれた子である（わたくし）長利僧が母（黒売刀自）の為に記し定めた文である。放光寺の僧。
“In the year 681 AD, on the third day of October, during the tenth year of Emperor Tenmu’s reign in the Shinshi era, I, a monk named Chori and descendant of Takenomorino-mikoto, who played a role in establishing the Sanono-miyake, am recording these words. I am the child of Kurometoji, a descendant of Shitatamino-sukune, the daughter of Nikkawano-omi’s son, who married into the Ogo-no-omi family. I, Chori, a monk at Hōkō-ji Temple, am writing this document for my mother, Kurometoji.”

Amulet for mother
– Wishing for happiness and expressing gratitude for our mothers. –
This amulet encapsulates the sentiments of the Asuka period monk, Chōri, who left words for his mother, as well as the wishes for safe childbirth and child-rearing from the shrine and Yamana Hachimangu. A portion of the proceeds from the amulet sales will be donated to activities aimed at preserving the Yamanoue Monument.

どうしたら、歴史的な遺産や遺跡が
守れるのか。
大切な遺産を次世代につなげられるのか。
国や自治体の補助金の保護を離れた時、
そんな疑問がふとよぎりました。
その中で、日本、世界中の遺産や遺跡維持の
ヒントになる仕組みとなればと思い、
寄付の仕組みに透明性のある遺産保全の仕組み
（1 COIN SAVING HERITAGE）を
「TO MOTHER -山上碑保全プロジェクト-」
では導入しています。
How can we preserve historical heritage and landmarks? How can we pass on valuable heritage to the next generation? These questions were raised when considering the protection of heritage beyond government subsidies. Within this context, it was beneficial for a mechanism that could serve as a guide for heritage and site maintenance in Japan and worldwide.
Introducing a transparent heritage conservation system through a donation mechanism titled “1 COIN SAVING HERITAGE” is the goal of the “TO MOTHER – Yamakami Monument Conservation Project.” We hope this initiative can provide a clear insight into heritage preservation both in Japan and around the world.
